Thai Airways May Resume Direct Russia-Thailand Flights by 2027

Direct flights between Russia and Thailand have been off the schedule since March 2020, when Thai Airways pulled its Russian routes due to the pandemic. Now the national carrier is taking the idea seriously again. The target date: as early as 2027. The delay is straightforward, a shortage of aircraft, with the airline waiting on new deliveries before it can commit to the route.
Why the Pause Has Lasted Six Years
Thai Airways grounded its Russia service at the start of the pandemic and never brought it back, even as demand kept climbing. In 2025, about 1.9 million Russians visited Thailand, a record that placed Russia fourth among all nationalities arriving in the country, and first among European source markets. In the first months of 2026, Thailand has already welcomed over 950,000 Russian visitors. The commercial case is obvious; the fleet simply is not there yet.
The airline's interest in reviving the route makes complete sense. The obstacle is purely operational: with the current aircraft shortage, Thai Airways cannot commit to consistent frequency on new routes.
What a Direct Route Changes
Getting from Russia to Thailand today almost always involves a connection, typically through Dubai, Istanbul, Doha, or Kuala Lumpur, adding anywhere from four to twelve hours to the journey. A direct Thai Airways service changes things on several fronts:
total travel time drops by several hours each way
competition appears on the route, which puts downward pressure on fares
the journey becomes far more practical for families and long-stay travelers
Accessible routes reliably generate more visitors. More visitors reliably generate more property interest, particularly in Pattaya, which has long been the first choice for Russian residents in Thailand.
What This Means for Pattaya Buyers and Renters
Pattaya has long been the default destination for Russian buyers and long-term residents in Thailand, with an established Russian-speaking community, a wide range of projects at every price point, and convenient access to the sea. Cheaper, faster flights directly expand the pool of people who will make the trip in person. And in-person visits have a consistent track record of turning into purchases or long-term Pattaya rentals. Browsing Pattaya's neighborhoods and comparing options before the flight is always a smart starting point.
If 2027 holds, the market effect will appear earlier: route announcements are a known demand trigger, and they tend to activate interest well before the first flight lands. Those currently looking at buying property in Pattaya for personal use or investment will find the math more favorable before demand picks up. Supply in good locations is limited, and transport accessibility news is precisely the kind of signal that moves the market.
