Kathu is the western district (amphoe) of Phuket: 3 tambons, with tourist-oriented Patong, quiet Kamala to its north and Kathu inland, between Patong and Phuket Town.
Kamala
A quiet beach north of Patong and hills above the bay. 31 minutes to the airport, 23 to town
Officially it is Kamala tambon in Kathu amphoe, the same amphoe as Patong.
Condos sit near the sea and villas on the hills. Wallaya Hill stands on a hill above Kamala. Condos cannot be built higher than 80 m above sea level, so only small houses are allowed on the slopes.
In July 2024 the authorities named Kamala among the areas worst hit by flooding. When choosing a condo, we check the plot's elevation and drainage.
The airport is 27 km away, 31 minutes by car, and Phuket Town is 20 km away, 23 minutes without traffic.

Kathu

Officially it is Kathu tambon in Kathu amphoe. It lies inland, between Phuket Town and Patong.
The area is home to Loch Palm golf club and the QSI and Kajonkiet international schools.
In July 2024 the authorities named Kathu among the areas worst hit by flooding.
Phuket Town is 12 km away, about 15 minutes by road, and the airport is 29 km away, about 35 minutes when there is no traffic.

Patong
The island's main tourist centre, over the hill: Patong Beach, Kalim, nightlife, 20 minutes to town
Officially, this is Patong tambon in Kathu amphoe. It covers Patong and Kalim.
This is the island's main tourist and nightlife centre, and a hill separates it from the rest of Phuket. Patong has its own hospital.
Patong floods in heavy downpours: on 26 October 2026 a mudslide came down the hill through the Na Nai area, and in August 2026 Soi Nanai was flooded.
The Kathu-Patong tunnel will be 3.98 km long: under the EXAT plan, construction starts in October 2027 and the tunnel opens in October 2031.
The airport is 37 km away, about 43 minutes' drive, and Phuket Town is 16 km away, about 20 minutes without traffic.
